GTU (Graduate Theological Union)

I. Theories on the Symbolic Dimension of Social Reality: A written examination investigating recent theories on symbols and their relation to society.
II. Max Weber's Historical-Comparative Method: A written examination covering selected writings of his sociology of religion and its applications and critiques by more contemporary authors.

III. American Nationalism, 1880-1945: A major paper focusing the general historical-cultural background of a symbolism of "redeemer nation'' and its role in the period, 1880-1945.

IV. Japanese Nationalism, 1890-1945: A major paper investigating the formation of the political ideology of Tennosei called Kokutai ("national constitution") in relation to the political and intellectual conditions of the period (1890-1945) in which it was being shaped.

V. The Problem of the Modern State: Contemporary Approaches of Protestant Theology and Political Philosophy. A written examination on several major Protestant theologians' and political philosophers' reflections on selected issues of the modern state, especially totalitarianism.

I. Theories on the Symbolic Dimension of Social Reality

CHOOSE 4 questions to answer from the following:
1. Considering the variety of theoretical positions covered in your bibliography regarding
the symbolic dimension of culture, which two positions are, in your opinion, most
different from one another?  Can they in any way be reconciled?

2. The theoretical significance of praxis is usually traced to the influence of Marx. What
other historical and theoretical roots does it have?

3. Jurgen Habermas distinguishes between systemic and life-world aspects of societies.
How do these differ as symbolic realities? What does the "colonization of the life-world by economic and political administrative system say about the "independent" power of
symbolic resistance in the modern world?

4. Durkheim refers to society as one-vast network of symbols. What did he mean by this?
Contrast his view of collective representations with Weber's understanding of society.

5. Clifford Geertz has written: "a religion is (1) a system of symbols which acts to (2)
establish powerful, persuasive and long-lasting moods and motivations in men by (3)
formulating conceptions of a general order of existence and (4) clothing these
conceptions with such an aura of factuality that (5) the moods and motivations seem
uniquely realistic."
    a. Discuss the understanding of "symbol" Geertz is using and contrast Geertz's
view with that some other thinker.
    b. How, in Geertz's perspective, is religion related to social reality?
    c. Comment critically on the way Geertz relates religion, symbol, and social
reality from 1) a Marxist perspective (Habermas or some other) and 2) from a Christian
perspective (Niebuhr or Tillich).

6. Write brife essay on the contributions of the thought of Alfred Schutz to the Jurgen
Habermas of The Theory of Communicative Action.

Kyle: Yep, I'm afraid you're right. In the opening chapter of his Systematic Theology (pp. 35-37), ○○○○ offers this truly amazing summary of how we should practice systematic theology: (1) "Find all the relevant verses" on a certain topic; (2) "summarize the points made in the relevant verses"; (3) "Finally, the teachings of the various verses should be summarized into one or more points that the Bible affirms about that subject."

Happily, this procedure "is possible for any Christian who can read his or her Bible and can look up words in a concordance". Wow, talk about "scientific" theology!

That description of theological method is hilarious. I thought I'd give it a try - so here's a systematic theology of pissing (following ○○○○'s 3 steps):

(1) I looked up "pisseth" in Strong's Concordance: 1 Sam 25:22, 25:34; 1 Kings 14:10, 16:11, 21:21; 2 Kings 9:8.

(2) The main point in these relevant verses is that the person "who pisseth against a wall" will be condemned and cut off.

(3) Therefore, here is what the Bible affirms about the subject: we should always use the restroom, and all those who piss on walls should be excluded from the church.

Hi Les and JBH -- thanks for your comments. And I agree: I hope we can avoid "erudite muck flinging"!

I also agree with you about the charismatic sections of ○○○○'s Systematic Theology -- I think this stuff is very interesting and creative, and it has helped to foster serious theological reflection on Pentecostal/charismatic experience.

But I still can't help feeling discouraged at the popularity of ○○○○'s book as a classroom text -- there are plenty of better books available! In particular, a good theological textbook should model actual theological thinking, instead of merely providing students with the illusion of ready-made answers. After all, many theological students will go on to become pastors: and in pastoral ministry, what's needed is not ready-made answers, but the ability to think theologically in new and unpredictable situations.

Hi Ben,

Though it's very late for me to comment yet the post and your question are irresistibly intriguing.

Over at Trinity Theological College, Singapore, McGrath's 4th ed. text is preferred as it's a good introduction to theology.

And that'll also lead the students to McGrath's other advanced works.

On the other hand, ○○○○'s text is surprisingly very dull. When I was looking for a systematic theology text, I'd never got enough reason to get ○○○○ though its latest edition's front cover is beautiful.

Not sure if his text is that popular worldwide, but it seems to be so in my part of the world.

If it's true that ○○○○ is the most widely used text, then no wonder the theological scene, especially at post-colonial countries like Malaysia and Singapore (where I'm from), is generally dull and unexciting as compared to other parts of the world.
