米国福音派と聖書

英語圏ブログ紹介③で紹介したティム・ゴンビスが、Evangelicals & the Bibleと言うタイトルでシリーズ連載している。

簡単に紹介すると、彼が自分が教える神学校や、他の場所での講演などで（主に）学生、つまり福音派の学生が決まって同じような反応を示すのだと言う。

授業や講演が終わって、ゴンビスに、「そんなこと今まで一度も聞いたことがない。」、といかにも「それは果たして聖書的か」と言う雰囲気で不満そうに反応を示すのだそうだ。

ゴンビスは最初そのような反応を「若者特有の傲岸さ」の現われだとそれほど気にしていなかったそうだ。
しかし同様な反応に度々遭遇し、「これは福音派に特有なものではないか」と思い注意して観察するようになったようだ。

どうやら福音派に育った青年は「自分たちは聖書に関し知るべきことは既にみな知っている」と言う態度を持っているようだ。
それが極めて判然と現れたある授業（福音派ではない環境）でのエピソードをゴンビスは紹介している。

授業の後のコメントは殆んどが以下のようなものであったと言う。

This is so interesting. Thank you, I’m really enjoying this and learning a lot.

 しかし一人だけ全く違う反応をしてこう言ったという。

 I've never heard this before.

 この人がまさに福音派だった、と言うのである。

何か新しいことを学んだら、嬉しい、楽しい、面白い・・・と言う反応が返ってくるはずのところが、こと聖書に関しては福音派の人たちはフラストレーションを覚える。
これは一体どうしたことか。

と言うわけで、ゴンビスの『米国福音派と聖書』 ブログ記事シリーズが始まったわけである。

I think that the most decisive factor in shaping warped postures toward the Bible is evangelical involvement in the culture wars.  Some of us have been told that “we” are the ones who are faithful to the Bible while “they” (“liberals,” “the media,” “skeptics,” etc.) are attacking the Bible.  We need to defend the Bible, “uphold biblical values,” and advance the “biblical” teaching on this or that issue.

The intensity of the culture wars—the feeling that there’s so much at stake—can frustrate us when our understanding of Scripture is challenged.

I wonder if much of our evangelical rhetoric about our role in culture and an evangelical posture toward the world perverts our posture toward the Bible.

I was struck that some students weren’t necessarily trying to understand notions in Scripture and integrate them with aspects of lives.  Their first concern was to know what to say in conversations or debates with others.

We don’t have the Bible for the purpose of fighting and squabbling, strategizing so that “our side” might dominate “their side.”  God gave his word to his people that we might gain a heart of wisdom, that we might love and serve God, loving and serving one another with gladness and singleness of heart.

と、ほんの一部だけを抜粋しながら紹介してみたが、ゴンビスは米国福音派の青年（だけに限らないだろうが）にしばしば見られる「歪んだ」聖書への態度は「カルチャー・ウォー」の文脈から出てくる特徴と感じているようである。

自分たちが保持している聖書解釈を守らなければならない。
そんな「自己防衛反応」が、聖書の新しい解釈に遭遇した時、「そんなこと今まで一度も聞いたことがない。」と言うように現れてくるのではないだろうか。

だとすると30年以上も前の、ハロルド・リンゼルのThe Battle for the Bibleの時の「聖書無誤論争」と何か相通じるメンタリティーがあるのかもしれない。
