The problem is, failure to listen can make one tone deaf. Rachel was always trying to break into our echo chambers. I did not always like when and how she did it, but dismissing her in favor of the sounds of our own voices was not always the right choice.
But, Rachel was not satisfied with the evangelicalism of her youth, and our direct messages reflect that divergence. (Perhaps ironically, I started my faith journey in the Episcopal Church and ended up a conservative evangelical. She started as a conservative evangelical and ended up an Episcopalian.)
Rachel Held Evans didn’t “usher the vulnerable into her doubts”. Rather, she gave them permission to be honest about the doubts they were already having. In a world where Christians like Mr. Stonestreet are ever ready to censure hard questions and honest doubts with the stentorian warning of “grave error”, Rachel Held Evans invited others to learn from her struggles so that they could work through their own.

Like many little magazines, Books & Culture was a response to a problem. As Wilson remarked in a recent podcast, "It was not accidental that The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind came out in '94 and the first issue of B&C in '95." Lamenting the persistence of anti-intellectualism within American evangelicalism, Scandal was an "epistle from a wounded lover," articulating Mark Noll's "hope that we American evangelicals might yet worship God with our minds."

So what did Lloyd-Jones say exactly, and why was it so controversial?
At its heart, Lloyd-Jones’s address was a call for visible unity among evangelicals to match their spiritual unity. He lamented that they were divided among themselves and “scattered about in the various major denominations . . . weak and ineffective.” But he believed the ecumenical turmoil of the 1960s presented “a most remarkable opportunity” to rethink evangelical ecclesiology along New Testament lines.
In particular, he argued that evangelicals were guilty of “the sin of schism” for remaining visibly separated from each other, while being visibly united in their denominations to people who denied the gospel essentials. “I am a believer in ecumenicity,” he provocatively declared, “evangelical ecumenicity!” Evangelicals should not be satisfied with unity merely through parachurch networks and societies, Lloyd-Jones insisted, but should come together in “a fellowship, or an association, of evangelical churches.”
Evangelicals
And then, of course, our Founding Fathers wrote that in the Constitution, where the Bill of Rights, those 10 enumerated rights, started with religious liberty. It was put number one for a reason! Because that sets the tone. That is the foundation for all our other freedoms. And yet when Barack Obama became president, I think there was a conscious effort to undermine our religious liberty. You’ve probably seen it from that time to this. Have you noticed that the president and Democrats and Hillary — yes, Hillary — no longer talk about “freedom of religion”? They talk about “freedom of worship.” Why have they changed that? It’s very small, a one-word change. Well, freedom of worship means that you are confined to your churches and your synagogues, but freedom of religion, as identified in the Constitution, is in the public square, it’s everywhere. So they have tried to limit us to our church activity. So we’re seeing more and more of that.
HOMILETICS: You weren’t always an open theist. How did this change in direction come about for you?
PINNOCK: Well, I used to be a five-point Calvinist in the late ’60s and then I came to read Hebrews and noticed how it appears our relationship to God is conditional upon faith, so I was intrigued by the idea that God is conditioned by some of the things that creatures do.(※ここではピノックが最初は「5論点カルヴィニズム」からスタートして、ヘブル書を読んで神観が変化したことを述べています。
The old view is that God is not conditioned by anything his creatures do because he has determined what they do. But if, in fact, God’s will is affected by what his creatures decide, then that calls for a personal theism, relational theism, open theism.
So in a way open theism goes right back to the early ’70s when I realized the weakness of deterministic thinking. And then over the years I wrote different things on the subject. Then John Sanders talked to me and we decided that since this is a view that some people know about, but not all, let’s present it in a clear way just for evangelicals so that they can see what we think.
HOMILETICS: Has this made a ripple on the mainline side, or is this a problem primarily for evangelicals?
PINNOCK: The Evangelical Theological Society is a peculiar group of very conservative evangelicals. But there are many who consider themselves evangelicals who don’t go to it who you would find in different sections of the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature and who are positioned in the Wesleyan faith. So they see it correctly, namely, as a variant of their own position and worthy of consideration — which is all we want them to do. Like Randy Maddox [Professor of Wesleyan Theology, Seattle Pacific University], for example, a major interpreter of Wesley, who wrote a great book. He says that [John] Wesley might well have considered openness in full agreement with what he was getting at.
So there are evangelicals who are not ETS evangelicals. You almost need a new term. There are the ETS types who would go after me like that, but normal evangelicals who are outside that, they regard it just for what it is — a variant of Wesleyan-Arminian thinking. [Roger] Nicole, a five-point Calvinist, wants to emphasize how different our view is so they can isolate it as a heresy, because they don’t want to criticize all Wesleyan-Arminians although they don’t like their views.

It’s about fear.
My theory is that what Professor Hawkins really violated were the implicit but very real political preferences of Wheaton’s constituency, not the school’s explicit theological standards.
Nowhere in that doctrinal statement does it say explicitly that to believe Muslims and Christians “worship the same God” is out of bounds. It is certainly quite possible to argue either side of the issue today, from an explicitly evangelical perspective. Consider evangelical theologian Miroslav Volf, who defended Hawkins in a recent response to the Wheaton controversy and has long argued for the exact point that has her in trouble.

Like Nixon, Trump uses vague references to moral decline and American patriotism to cast a wide net, to appeal to a broad swath of conservatives who feel alienated from the machinations of Washington bureaucrats, but who can hear their grievances reflected in Trump’s “Make America Great Again” sloganeering.

The second factor was the beginning of conversations with members of Fuller's board about the Fuller presidency. These conversations were paralleled by discussions within the Fuller community about the relevancy of "inerrancy" as the means of expressing biblical authority.
While the work proceeded on the revision of Fuller's doctrinal statement, the issue of the importance and meaning of inerrancy continued to bubble on our campus and across the land.
A memorable debate between Jim Packer and Frank Andersen encapsulated this division. I left Wenham heartened by the common ground among most of the biblical scholars and by my surmise that a number of the theologians were attracted to the term inerrancy more by the desire not to cause division or raise suspicion than by the conviction that it was an essential biblical label.
...Volume 2 of New Testament Foundations in the mid-seventies. The discussion centered on the question of Pauline or Paulinist authorship of Ephesians and the Pastorals. Did we at Fuller want to be first on the block to break with the conservative-evangelical consensus on this?
Our main thesis was that inerrancy and evangelicalism were not synonymous. Our chief plea was that evangelicals should unite around our commitment to Scripture and our orthodox heritage and not go to war over any particular word used among us to define Scripture's inspiration.
Happily, it has led to discussions on the more central question, not how do we describe the Bible, but how do we interpret it.

Donald Trump preaches an unadulterated version of this materialistic and utilitarian gospel.
As a result, we begin hoping in a presidential candidate’s ability to save the country, and we hijack our basic motivation to worship God and use it to worship a political office. I believe this is precisely what is happening with the support of Donald Trump.
The lack of authentic Christianity hit home when I heard Donald Trump say he had never asked God for forgiveness. His words carried their own weight, but the larger problem was that the Evangelical community, which professes to love God like no other ...love Jesus like no other ...was silent.
The Evangelical community lost its credibility for me at that point. While I have not agreed with many of that community's stances on issues such as right to life or gay marriage, what I always believed was that they were grounded in the words of Jesus the Christ.
